Life was pleasant

Life was pleasant, in God's mercy

I with earthly things was blessed.

Then my comforts were ripped from me

Leaving me in deep distress.

My foundations have been shaken.

Life will never be the same.

He has given, He has taken.

I will praise His holy Name.

As I face this situation -

All my hopes and dreams are torn -

This I say, in contemplation,

While I lie beneath men's scorn:

As will be my final station,

Naked from the womb I came.

He has given, He has taken.

I will praise His holy Name.

All my closest friends and fam'ly

Bring no comfort in the dust.

As they see my state, they urge me

"Curse the God in whom you trust."

When I'm filled with hesitation,

Then these words burn like a flame:

He has given, He has taken.

I will praise His holy Name.

This I have as my protection:

I know my Redeemer lives.

Through His death and resurrection

Life and peace to me He gives.

In my trials I'm not forsaken,

He'll not leave me in my shame.

He has given, He has taken.

I will praise His holy Name.
